Can I control Vera via Google Calendar -or- from a power outage?

I have been following this forum for a while now but this is my first post. I’ve been using X10’s for 25 years, but it’s time to grow up. I purchased a vacation home last year and I’m ready to implement some control (door locks, thermostats, temperature sensors, cameras and a few lights) but I need help with a few things that I’m still not quite sure are possible to do. I am also still undecided between Vera & Homeseer, and I am not a programmer so please provide any specifics…

This home control setup will be for a vacation rental home which has a central heat system (with no A/C) and 2 gas fireplaces. We need to maintain a minimum temperature during the winter months to keep the pipes from freezing when the house is vacant.

  1. Is there a way to set the thermostat based on a Google Calendar Event?
So, before a guest arrives I want to be able to have the heat set up to a certain temperature at the start of a Google Calendar Event and then set back down at the end of the Calendar Event.

  2. The gas fireplaces will still heat the house if there is a power outage. So assuming the gas fireplace thermostat was battery operated (or battery backup) and the Vera was on a UPS…If there is a power outage, is there a way to have Vera turn the heat up on my fireplace?

Thanks…
