Caddx NX-8E Help Please

Hello,

I have a GE/Caddx Nx-8E panel that I am trying to integrate into my Vera 3. I have connected the two with a P-0003 cable connected to the NX-8E board, The P-0003 cable is connected to a DB9 RS232 Null Modem Cable. The RS232 cable is connected to USB to serial adapter which is plugged into the Vera 3.

I have programmed the NX-8E following http://forum.micasaverde.com/index.php/topic,14295.0.html

After the physical setup, I have followed the instructions at UI5 – GE Caddx Networx NX-584 NX-8E Alarm Plugin and the Caddx Device is created in the Vera. I installed the GE Caddx NetworX Alarm Panels Plugin Version 81.0.

However, I cannot scan any of the zones and the Vera Advanced UI continually displays the following message:
Caddx NX584 Security System[20]: Running Lua Startup.

I have rebooted the Vera multiple times and always end up in the same place. I have tried multiple baud rate settings making sure to keep the NX-8E and Vera Serial Port configuration in synch (presently at 9600).

What am I missing and how can I resolve this? Much appreciation for your help!

Also, I looked at the luup log via /cgi-bin/cmh/log.sh?Device=LuaUPnP and keep seeing the following repeat over an over periodically:

Thanks for posting the logs. The symptoms in the logs are pretty clear: no message the Vera sends is reaching the NX-8E. However, messages from the NX-8E to Vera are arriving fine.

Since serial connections are full duplex, this can arise from a cable with a bad connection in either the TX or RX wire. The only surefire way to test this hypothesis is to swap out every part of the connection (P-0003 cable, USB-to-serial adapter) and retry. But read on for a more likely culprit.

USB-to-serial adapters need to step up the voltage from USB levels (5 V) to RS-232 levels (12 V). This requires a lot of current, often more than the Vera USB port can supply. A lot of the time this can be solved by adding an externally powered USB hub between the Vera and the USB-to-serial adapter. The extra power gives the USB-to-serial adapter the boost it needs to be able to send signals all the way to the NX-8E.

If you search for “USB hub” in this subforum you will see how often this crops up.

@futzle Thank you for you assistance!

Unfortunately, I am still stuck. I have added a powered USB hub to the mix as suggested. I actually tried 3 different ones to no avail. I then changed out both the serial cable and the serial to USB adapter replacing them with a new cable (although this one did not have null modem) - also to no avail. I Have not swapped out the P003 as it is expensive, takes a great deal of time to get here and is hard to find vendors for.

I have included latest logs below for your reference.

Is there a known trusted vendor for P003 cable?
Do I need a null modem in mix?
What baud rate should I try - I presently have both sides set to 9600 but have tried others to no avail.

Anything else I can do to troubleshoot that would be of value?

Thanks again for your help!

That’s good solid testing. You’ve definitely reduced the likelihood that there’s a problem with the Vera, the USB-to-serial adapter and the power level.

I don’t think that your baud rate is a problem. Or that you’ve got transmit/receive crossed wrongly. So any talk about null modem cables is probably not going to be productive.

Since you are still getting the same outcome (getting full messages from panel to Vera, but no messages from Vera to panel), it’s time to look at the parts you didn’t swap out. Sorry.

See if there are any status LEDs on the NX-8E board that can tell you if it is receiving packets over the serial interface. I have an NX-584 board, which does have these LEDs, but whether they are also on the NX-8E is unknown to me. You’d be looking for blinking in this LED when you reload LUUP on the Vera.

See if there is a good electrical connection in your P0003 cable. Both ends can have issues with not making a good connection. You can google which pins are the ones carrying the serial-to-panel signal. Inspect them. Inspect the header on the NX-8E board. Squeeze and jiggle stuff. This kind of messing about has been reported to fix the problem by one user a couple of years ago.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any means of testing the P0003 cable electrically. As the only part left to be changed out is the P0003 which was quite expensive, I’m wondering if alternatives may be acceptable. Could I trouble you to take a look at the following and tell me if either of these would be an acceptable replacement for the P0003 please?

I’ve got no way of knowing. You’d have to get a pinout diagram/table showing which DB9 pin connects to which pin in the 10-pin header, and compare with the same pinout for the P-0003. Just because the physical shape of the connector matches doesn’t mean the pinout is the same. Neither of those Amazon listings tells you the pinout. I don’t have a P-0003 cable and I’ve never seen one in real life. I’m only going by the descriptions that I’ve seen here in this forum.

Another thing you can and should try is to install the DL900 software on a PC and connect that to your alarm panel. This is the configuration software that installers use to avoid having to program it through the keypad. If there’s a physical fault in the P-00003 cable or the header on the NX-8E’s board, it won’t work either, but it’s good evidence that the problem is on the alarm panel end rather than the Vera end.

Because (I think) the problem is on the alarm panel end, you can also benefit from other automation forums. I did a bit of searching and found some discussions on the Homeseer forums, for instance. They might be instructive.

What bothers me is the messages in the Vera log “IOPort::Run RecvFailed 146 close 12”. These messages aren’t supposed to happen, and they are logged quickly after the corresponding message was sent so they’re not timeouts. They smell like flow control blockages, or a dropped DTR line, or something that is at the logic gate level rather than the physical connection level. I wasn’t aware of there being any way to control those from the NX-8E, either through jumpers on the panel or through programming the keypad. My model is not the NX-8E, which is not ever sold in my country, so again I’m only going by what I’ve read.

You did program the alarm panel to accept the necessary messages, right?

You’ve about exhausted my expertise. If I were in your shoes I’d try to get the DL900 software going, or MisterHouse or some other program that can talk the Caddx protocol, and try to get two-way communication going without the Vera. Failing that, bite the bullet and drop another $30 on a cable that is known to work. Or get a cheap multimeter and check the cable you’ve got.

Great advice Futzle!

I would highly recommend the next step in troubleshooting be downloading and installing the DL900 software. That will quickly be able to show the issue. I have had quite a few issues with connectivity between the Vera and NX8e panel that I have, but my DL900 software always confirms the physical side is good for me.
