CA600 capabilities

Quick questions here (I searched for the answers but I must have searched poorly):

Can the CA600 switches…

…be used as switchable outlet switches (like where you have a switch at the entrance of a room that’s connected to a power outlet on the other side of the room)?

…be used with fluorescent lights?

…be used to turn a ceiling fan on/off? …be used to control the speed of a ceiling fan?

Someone else might plug in an appliance.
…be used with fluorescent lights?
Dimmable CFLs, maybe. Regular ones, no.
…be used to turn a ceiling fan on/off? …be used to control the speed of a ceiling fan?
No. Dimmers work differently than fan controls. The only Z-Wave fan control is the Leviton VRF01. A regular Z-Wave On/Off can be used, but won’t control the speed.

Sorry to be a buzz-kill.

Well aren’t you a wet blanket?

Heh, just kidding, of course! I appreciate information above all else. I’m disappointed, but I’m happy to know what you’ve told me, so thank you for your response.

So I gather that on/off switches would work for all of the above? So that means either the CA3000’s, which are hard to find, or something like the 45609’s, which are more expensive?

And does all of this apply to a bathroom fan as well?

Yup. The dimmers will probably say something like ‘incandescent loads only’.

Thanks. And sorry to be a stickler for this, but I want to make sure I completely understand: will on/off switches work for all of these things?

No worries. From the CA3000 sheet:

So it should work for ‘anything’[sup]1[/sup]. Essentially, because the on/off switches typically use a relay, it’s much like a mechanical switch. I don’t have this device, but users report it’s loud. You’ll need a neutral. Similar for the GE.

([sup]1[/sup] If you’re looking to switch just a few watts (of LEDs), there have been reports of some on/off switches / plug-ins not switching off fully; i.e. some devices may have a recommended minimum wattage.)

Thanks so much! This forum is fantastic. I’ve posted to many home automation forums over the years, and this one is my favorite so far.

Thanks again for the help.

One important thing with Intermatic Switch is that CA600 and CA5000 can be used as a 3-way switch with out the need of an additional Z-wave switch.
I follow the instruction and could put a Dimmer CA600 and at the other end use an standard 3-way switch that come with my house, and work amazing.
You have to read it carefully because it need a Jumper in the other end.
About the Florescent Light, no, it doesn’t work with them. I tried. For my Kitchen I had to buy a CA5000, and sadly I had to replace all Energy saver Bulb with normal bulb when using dimmer.

Never had tried the Led Dimmeable light, if some body know as a fact that they work with Dimmer, please let us know.

Thanks everybody.

Will CA600s work with dimmable LEDs (Cree CR4)?
