Buy refurb Vera 2?

I notice that MCV is selling refurb Vera 2s on eBay for $88. I’ve currently got Vera 1. Is it worth upgrading or should I really be looking at Vera 3?

If Vera1 isn’t cutting it anymore, then you’ll probably want to jump past Vera2 to a Vera3 (or even Vera Lite if your network of devices is smaller in size).

There is no need to go to Vera 2 if your Vera 1 is still going strong. Vera 2 isn’t much of an upgrade over Vera 1 so you should skip over that jump.

I guess I should have also mentioned that I would take my Vera 1 and use it at my rental condo. So really the question was if Vera 3 is that much better than Vera 2 that I should spend the extra $200 or so.

If you do not need wifi and the extra ethernet ports, Vera Lite is the way to go as it is cheaper than Vera 3. Both Units have much more ram than vera 2 and that is a big limiting factor when you start adding more devices and plugins. I say that if you are thinking of upgrading your vera, I would either go the Vera Lite or Vera 3 route. Vera lite has 64MB of ram vs 32MB in Vera 2. Vera 3 has 128MB or ram.

How many devices / plugins are we talking about (limiting on Vera 2?)
I currently have about 2 dozen and have another dozen plus on order (yay Intermatic sale)

You should be fine with 50 plus devices on the Vera 2. It is really the plugins that take a toll on the memory for the Vera 2. You can always add a usb drive to the Vera 2 and add a swap file to it.

Thanks for the comments … definitely helping me make a better-informed decision.

I probably have about 25-30 devices. I have a big house and could see it growing to 50+, but probably not. WiFi is not a concern for me - I have good wireless routers that I can use instead of Vera.
