Black and Decker Deadbolt... zigbee or zwave?

So I was reading an article on how 17 new home automation products just passed zigbee certification. On this list was a motorized black and decker deadbolt… did we lose this product to zigbee? I doubt it would be interoperable with both standards…

This would be very disappointing.

I suppose MCV could always sell a zigbee dongle…

They could, and along with it all the growing pains. Another 2-3 years.

I hear you, it was partially sarcastic… but with all of the X10/Insteon development going on its nice to know MCV has a diverse product that can adapt to different industry standards if necessary.

Obviously I want zwave to be successful, but with intermatic giving its zwave division to WD and other companies like B&D defecting to zigbee you never know where HA is headed. I think we will end up with multiple standards for the foreseeable future.

Who says intermatic is selling Zwave to WD?

Intermatic “stopped production” on all of their zwave products. However Wayne Dalton has been the one manufacturing them for quite awhile. So the brand name will just switch over from Intermatic to Wayne Dalton who will continue to sell the line. But most of the intermatic branded stuff can be found at steeply discounted prices at the moment.

I had heard that also. I recently took the training seminar from Intermatic I wave. They told me that intermatic is returning , all of the Iwave pool and spa will be Zwave certified. Also they mentioned something about the fact that they will be bringing back the other Zwave stuff. We’ll see.

Who knows… a lot of these news sites put out a lot of propaganda to swing consumers towards or away from specific companies and standards. We will just have to wait and see what actually happens.

However, I am very disappointed if the B&D lock goes to zigbee. I wanted a motorized solution I could actually remote lock/unlock. The Schlage deadbolt doesn’t do me much good remotely if I forgot to lock the door.

Who said Black and Decker lock will not be Zwave?
It is a modular unit. Any tranceiver can be placed in the lock. You can even change from Zigbee to Zwave at the turn of a screw. Zigbee was always due out first.
Have you heard anything different.?

Oh, well, I wasn’t aware that they were going to sell 2 units. Thats good to hear…

Has something been announced that changes the news of last April?

I guess talking to them at Cedia will get some answers.

I’m used to think about zigbee as more of industrial standard, not really available to consumer. Am I mistaken?
If there would be zigbee USB stick supported in Linux there would be nothing preventing Vera to support it…

Despite some arguments about Zigbee’s potential(!) for interfering with 802.11 wireless technologies - thus ostensibly lessening its viability as a “residence-friendly” spec - it’s functionally equivelant to all the other protocols floating around. The low cost of all of today’s radio-frequency technologies means RF is an “a la carte” industry right now.

Z-Wave, Zigbee, Insteon RF, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi … all the radios are small, cheap and widely available, so it would be surprising if niche biases actually arose beyond “bottom line” considerations by manufacturers. Who, given the recent news about new Zigbee products and defections of certain former Z-Wave Alliance members, clearly have no allegiance or loyalty to any particular technology.

I can’t imagine the current crop of tech CEO’s really “getting” the promise of Z-Wave, esp. as compared to anything else in Home Automation. It’s all about the quick buck. I liken the broad menu of options to the many Web browsers available these days … all serve a purpose and largely do the same thing … all have followers and detractors … and all lack some crucial “selling feature(s)” which another competing product offers.

Who will win the RF War? Probably no one, in my opinion.

did we lose this product to zigbee? I doubt it would be interoperable with both standards...

It’s both Z-Wave and Zigbee with drop-in modules. The first release is Zigbee for Control4 systems, with Z-Wave following later. We’re showing the Z-Wave version at Cedia next week.

As I said!

Aaron - So you guys will be at Cedia? Great!!! I have my pass for it next week so I will stop by and see you guys.

I inquired with Kwikset/B&D and this is the response I recieved

Dear XXXXXXXX, There has been no release to us that the SmartCode will be released as a Zwave so as it stands now it is not being used with Zwave. thank you kwikset consumer support

well, since MCV actually has a zwave version and is showing it at cedia, thats a pretty strong inidicator that they know what they are talking about and it will eventually come out for zwave as well… im good with that

b&d consumer support obviously has no idea what they are talking about, they are probably trained to give the “safe” answer

I would have to agree with you on that one, was just passing along what I was told.
