BEST ZWAVE MOTION SENSOR as of 3/2014

.
6 - On value = Dimming level (20%) 255 means On (full)
Just to add to this, this is only active if you have direct group associations (manually configured). if you use Vera scenes, the on level of say 20% won’t effect anything. It will be what the Vera scene says. I would keep this at 255

With my battery-powered Aeon 4-in-1, it generally takes around 2-4 seconds (occasionally longer) for the sensor to register motion and send a signal to the vera, the vera to send a signal to a cloud service, and then the cloud service to push a notification to my smartphone. I don’t know how long it takes the sensor to actually wake up and send a signal, but I think 2-4 seconds for a round-trip notification isn’t horrible.

I have a schlage to try, and don’t see any of this device settings. Any thoughts?

It would be in the “Device Options” tab. If the parameter is not listed (or reduced number of configuration parameters), your sensor may not support it.

The HSM discussed has the all/most Z-Wave customized settings…so it may have more than the Schlage. The everspring has none for example. Timeout is a screw on the unit, and no sensitivity adjustment or ability to have a dimmable light go to a preset level (with direct association, Vera scenes work fine).

Nada on the tab. merp!

For the schlage there is a jumper in the case you use for testing (setting the reset to 5 seconds instead of 4 minutes of no motion) and the same jumper is used to set the “pet” sensitivity settings (there are only 2).

Note that not all devices list all their options in the Device options tab, though they can still use them. For instance the Aeon 4-in-1 has 5 settings visible on that tab when you include it, but there are others that you can also use to set the device to report Battery, Light, Humidity, and Temp on a regular basis (instead of waiting for the Vera to Poll it).

How would you do this?

How would you do this?
So to be clear, these devices do not wait for a poll to report to vera; the event is reported back based on its settings. For example, when motion is sensed, the device sends a signal directly and immediately through your network to vera. It won’t sit there waiting to be polled to report that it is tripped, for example.

Here’s the abridged version for the 4-in-1: http://forum.micasaverde.com/index.php/topic,3831.msg149761.html#msg149761 (EDIT: for the third item, use 600 seconds or more if you’re running on battery)

How did these work out?

HSM100-S3 looks to be very expensive at $74 each!

 • and these have AAA, not the lithium like most others. I’d be concerned about battery life. I like having a single battery, even if it is more expensive, that lasts for 2-3 years.

I’ve been using the schlage in several areas in the home and they work well… one place the do NOT work well is through glass. I had one pointed out my front window at then entry and they don’t work at all. If I put it on the other side if the window, they work too well and catch cars 100’ away. So I placed it on the side of the entry way - not ideal but it works.
… anyone try angling these down?
… anyone know of settings in Vera that can be controlled?

I have read tons of problems with the Aeotec 4-in-1 MultiSensor, have the issues been resolved?

Have been doing some other tricks and installing door sensors and setting up garage apps lately. Will be working on these motion sensors again soon enough.

Sadly, I tried the aeotec and they are super easy to add to Vera. One BIG problem though…the delay was terrible. For example, one location I wanted them was in my detached garage staircase leading to the upstairs apt. The delay was like 4 sec. I’m hitting every other step when I climb the stairs and was in the dark and half way up before the lights were told to come on. Tried this on other lights and got the same…long delay made them worthless for my needs. They were returned promptly.

So, this week I will be trying to get the HS100 working correctly. I can say this, when it triggers directly it was super fast. I just cant seem to get the thing to stay active. It goes to sleep and that’s all she wrote until I hit the blue button again. Got frustrated and moved on to other projects as I needed some reward for my efforts. LOL

Shawn,
I’ve been happy with the Schlage motions sensors. I have 6 around the house and outside. BTW, HSM100 has 3 versions/revisions… I read people having different issues with v1 & v2. Not sure which you have but you may want to look at that also.

Hi Aaron,

I have V3 but can;t seem to get the right recipe for success…
I really just want the motion, light would be a plus too I guess but motion is most important.

On the Schlage, you find the trigger time is fast and the battery life is good?

Is this the one you have?

Thanks!!

Yes. Schlage only have some model. It has worked perfectly for me. Coverage area is HUGE, it is fast too. BTW, There are sensativity setting jumpers inside but even on the lowest setting is very sensitive. It was ‘seeing’ people and cars 50’ away. Thus, don’t point it at the street - unless you really want those triggers

AWESOME!!! Sounds like I am on it and will post follow up once I get them and try them out. We live out in the sticks so its just us and potentially critters that will be setting them off ;o) I mostly want them for inside use anyway. BTW - the ones you have outside, I assume they are under cover from elements? Wonder if I could seal one if was exposed to elements…might try it and see…

Thanks so much for the hope!!

I really like the lithium too…guessing they get some great battery life…

Have a niceday,
Shawn

Just wanted to say I have installed two of the Schlage and so far so good :o) I did find that going a little lower increased the range and sensitivity…is that just me? They do trigger fast, easy install. My 52 lb dog trips but again, I have them set for sensitive and lower mount. The delay is minimal and the battery life seems very solid so far. Only installed interior but they are working great to light my hall ways in the evening…

I still have my HS motion, drives me crazy, sure some day I will try to tackle it again but have it in a drawer with no batteries at the moment ;o)

Thanks for all your help and suggestions all…

Just my 2 cents …

I have several different motion sensors in the house:
2 @ Schlage
2 @ Aeon 4-in-1
1 @ Everspring

So far I’ve had no problems with any of them in communicating with Vera. However, the battery life of the Schlage units is outstanding. Both have been installed since last August, 9 months, and the battery still shows 100 pct and they are in high traffic areas. They also exhibit very low false triggers when the sensitivity is set for small pets. The Aeons however “eat” batteries. One is in a low traffic area, the Master Bedroom and in the 3 months it’s been installed the batteries have dropped to about 60 pct. The Family Room unit, a high traffic areas, has been in for about a month and the batteries are down to 78 pct alert. Both units are configured for very high wake-up times and long auxiliary (temp/light/humidity) reporting times, about 5 minutes.

Glad to hear I went with the best battery life of your sensors mentioned ;o) I was having major delays with the Aeon…these Schlage seem to do the trick… Thanks for your input…looking forward to long lithium battery life!!
