Best hardware for kegerator temperature monitoring?

Can you believe that there is no mention of the word “kegerator” anywhere in these forums?

I’m looking for the best option for monitoring the temperature inside my kegerator… which is just a modified side-by-side refrigerator. I’ve got a couple of spare CA8900 thermostats that I’m thinking of using; however, I’m assuming that the radio signal won’t penetrate the refrigerator exterior. I wouldn’t have to assume, except that I’m midway through a heal right now & instead of being inside the fridge, the thermostat is sitting on battery power on top of the fridge. Baby steps, I guess…

Any thoughts? Has anyone ever connected a wired remote temperature sensor to the CA8900?

does that thermostat have a connection for a thermocouple (typically to monitor exterior temperatures)?

you could run a thermocouple wire through the hinge side of the door.

^^^What he said. The best way to do this is to get a wireless temperature monitor that has a thermocouple connection. It could be Z-wave or just plain wifi (if there is a Vera plugin for it).

I’ll be over when the beer is chilled ;D

I have an Everspring temperature & humidity monitor that I use for something else, but I think it would work inside your cooler. Model is ST814-2. It’s z-wave and fairly inexpensive. If you want to control it it would take a little more hardware.

No RF-based device is going to work well inside a fridge, they are like a Faraday cage with metal on almost all sides. Hence why you need one that accepts external temperature probes.

Thanks everyone. The ST814-2 is likely the way to go. I’ve just placed the CA8900 in the fridge just for fun… sure enough no poll  Well, at least I can use it to rough the temperature in before the keg goes in.

Here is a link to a photo album of my last kegerator project… I dubbed it the “Boozerator.”

Wow, you know, I hadn’t even looked into the Arduino sensors. Those look outstanding. I’ve just ordered a bunch of parts from the other side of the world. This is going to get interesting.

I will add this to my soon to build kegerator. Thanks for the info.

I’d like to add a display to the Arduino sensor which displays time, keg temp, and the name of the current beer on tap.
