Backfire failed to recognize Hauwei E173 3G modem

Hi
How do you set up a connection via a Huawei E173 3G modem?
my build is

When I plug it in I get this from dmesg

and I never got a /dev/ttyUSBx entry. Any ideas as to how I can establish connection to the Huawei E173 3G modem?
