avoiding problems with harmonyOne and GC-100

I currently use a harmony One to control my home theater and it works pretty well. I recently added a GlobalCache GC-100 device to the mix so that I can press a button on the wall and it will send signals out from stick-on IR emitters to turn the home theater on or off.

So where I am running into problems is if I use the wall button/GC100 to turn on my home theater, and then a few minutes later go to control things with the harmony. at that point as far as the harmony knows, the gear is off, so when I press Watch TV on the harmony, it actually ends up turning off the home theater.

similarly, if i turn on the home theater using the harmony and then later use the wall button/GC100 to turn it off, the next time I pick up the harmony, It thinks the gear is on so if i go to activities and then press watch tv, the gear stays off.

I am assuming this is because it is using the toggle button for power on my devices instead of discrete on and off commands.

So is there any better way to do this? I feel like in this case the harmony is trying to be too smart. I would like it to always send the discrete off commands even if it thinks the gear is already off and to send the discrete ON commands even if it thinks the gear is already on. is there any way to accomplish this?

This is the problem that lead me or more my wife pushed me to fix. We had the 1100 at the time a the only real effective way was to cover the ir port but that way not always suitable with a baby and kids. Searching through google lead me away from both the harmony and Vera for ir control and down the part of iRule on our mobiles which replaces the requirement to continue looking for a better way to manage this problem.

The Vera still has some AV setup but not utilised. The harmony 1100 we just stopped using. However at times we have stated to each other the dedicated remote was a missed.

in the harmony software you should be able to:

  • select the device,
  • click “settings”,
  • click “adjust power settings”,
  • click “i want to turn off this device when it’s not in use”,
  • click “One button on the remote for On, and a different button for Off”,
  • then select discrete on and off codes – if your device has them. [/li][/list]

that way when you tell the harmony to watch tv it will send the discreet on code and if the tv is already on the tv should ignore it and stay on.

i imagine you could also temporarily assign those codes to soft buttons on the remote then learn them with the GC100 from the harmony but i am just guessing about that part as i am not an GC100 expert.

not sure if that is exactly what you were asking after though?
