I am thinking about a z-wave system in to control a few lights. Here is what I am planning on buying. Is it enough or am I missing an important part:
4 X Switches (either GE or Wayne Dalton)
1 x GE 45602 Z-Wave Wireless Lighting Control Lamp Module
1 x Trane TZEMT400BB3 Thermostat
1 X HM-DW001 Door and Window Sensor
1 x Vera 2
Is that enough, or would I need anything more to get started?
I am also thinking about getting a remote (GE 45601) to allow me to toggle it from a different room. How nice does it play with the vera 2 configurations? Do I have to reprogram all the scenes all over again? Or can it run vera 2’s scenes?
For control, the Vera 2 is all you need. You do not need additional zwave control dongles or other hardware (besides, obviously, a pc/browser and router). The Vera 2 is a self-contained complete solution as a zwave controller.
For devices, there is an official zwave certified list in the wiki (check the forum stickies). The only item you have listed that might cause headaches is the ge remote…it is a scene controller, and they are not as simple to setup as they should be (zwave implementation issue, not a Vera issue).
The 45601 remote is not bad to program and works fairly well with Vera. However, only the ON side of the scenes work. Once you program the scenes in Vera, you can reload the remote and the OFF side of the scene button will turn off any lights in the scene.
