Amazon Echo with Vera in Canada

Hi all. I live in Canada and have been noticing all the posts about the Amazon echo and it appears to work quite well. Whoever Amazon has not released the echo for use in Canada

I’m not sure why it is taking so long but I have done some research and it seems that if I can order one to my USA address I could actually bring it back to Canada and still use it it’s just that some of the features like asking at what the weather is like etc. will report whatever ZIP Code in the USA you put into it. I don’t really care about those features I just want it to work with my vera

Has anyone in Canada tried an Amazon echo with Vera? If so what were your results?

Thanks for any replies!

This isn’t a question of whether Echo will work with Vera, it is a question of whether Echo will work in Canada. The Echo will work in Canada, especially if bought/registered to a U.S. address. Where you could possibly run into problems in the future is if they start filtering/geoIP blocking Echo’s access, though I haven’t heard of this happening with Echo yet.

You may or may not recall that a major feature of the Amazon Echo is music streaming. Thanks to the mess that is music rights licensing, Amazon may face - now or in the future - restrictions on where it is allowed to sell/stream music via Echo. If they started filtering/blocking Canada for this reason, your Echo may stop functioning correctly.

For now, Echo will work in Canada and it certainly works with Vera. But, until Amazon offers it in Canada, I’d definitely order and register it to a U.S. address.

Remember also that Amazon’s Echo is a voice recognition system. Until they officially roll it out to various countries, one should not expect support for non-English voice recognition. I don’t know if it will ever understand Newfinese, so be warned.
