Allowing visitors to access the internet through Vera

Help!! We live in TN and have a condo in FL. Vera is set up to work with our laptops and we access the internet through Vera. Is there a way to allow guests to access the internet through Vera, but keep them away from being able to access the controls???

I beleive you want to hit setup
users tab
add a user name and password for yourselves
(probably best to save at that point)
then on the users tab check the box for
“Require a username and password to access Vera from within my home network”

I only want allow them to access the internet. Do you think that this will work??

That’s my understanding. But I don’t work for mcv or anything so I’m not an expert. I believe if you search the wiki at wiki.mycasaverde.com it has a page about security. Maybe that explains better your different options…

If you want guests to use Internet only then I assume you are reffering to WiFi only network while you may or may not be using MCV as router (will work for both). Two things

  1. You already got the answer (above) how to lock down your Vera so that anyone who has access to your network has to go via one more process of authentication.

  2. Further, to allow Vera to work as WAP (WiFi/Wireless Access Point) Click
Setup->Advanced->Net & Wifi-> (Under Wireless at the bottom)

  • Wifi - ON
  • Channel - 11 (example/option is yours but choose something)
  • SSID : MyVera
  • Broadcast - NO (good Idea to hide from while collars)
  • Encryption : WPA2
  • PassKey - 1234567890 (example)

Click Save.

When guests arrive and request for an internet wifi connectivity provide them with SSID, Encryption Type (WPA2) and Passkey. Dont forget to charge them with smiles though.
Even though guests have access to Vera Page/IP Addrress but they will not be able to get in due to Passord lockdown you did in #1.

Hope this helps

  • Keeper

Most people arn’t going to type in the address to try to access vera to start with. As long as you have a password set up to access vera your fine. As far as the wifi goes when Keeper said not to Broadcast the name it makes it too difficult for most people that don’t know much about computers to get on the internet. With wpa2 encription there’s no real need to do that anyway. Besides if someone is sniffing for a AP they will see it anyway even if it’s not being broadcast.

hence hiding from white collar
