I would like to install a Kwikset lock and I have a couple of Aeon SmartSwitches lying around that may help with communications. However, I cannot get a definitive answer on whether they support the necessary “beaming” (encrypted data) for locks ?
Z-Wave “beaming” and encryption are two completely different technologies. They just happen to both be utilised by battery powered locks: beaming is used to wake the lock and encryption is used to ensure the lock is not opened by unauthorised people. A battery powered smoke detector may use a beam receiver like a lock does but it doesn’t need or use encryption.
Detailed information on beaming can be found in this document starting on page 15:
That just means it does not have a “Beam” receiver/sensor - and as it’s not a battery device it doesn’t need one. However it can transmit a “Beam” and wake a battery operated device.
Thanks. The Z-Wave firmware in the SmartSwitch is actually recent enough that it appears to support beaming. Also believed to be indicated by the letter [tt]B[/tt] in the [tt]Capabilities[/tt] string (and similarly decoded by the ‘sysinfo’ tools from @Ap15e and @a-lurker).
