Just the last weekend I installed the Vera Edge and my first device, a Schlage touchscreen zwave deadbolt lock. The whole process was pretty painless and the fact that we can get a text message when my son gets home from school has high WAF for sure. Now I’m looking to add more zwave locks on my other exterior doors for the ability to ensure everything is locked up while we are away; however, I’ve been stumped trying to find a zwave deadbolt lock that is suitable for an exterior door that has glass in it. All of them seem to include the manual knob on the interior side and none of them seem to have a captive key option. The door into my kitchen has a deadbolt currently that basically has a key hole on both sides because there is glass in the door. We keep a key near the door, but anywhere someone could break the door and reach in to use it (or even see if for that matter).
So I’m looking for a zwave deadbolt that has a captive key or mechanism on the back that can be removed so that the lock can’t be operated manually without it. This is a very common standard lock option, but just not so much for zwave it seems.
Lets step back… first most security experts will agree that having a double-keyed lock on an exterior door, has safety issues that significantly out way the perceived security benefit. The double-keyed locks are actually not even designed for exterior door purposes because of the safety issue they create (unable to easily exit the home in the case of a house fire, flooding,or other whole house emergency), they are really only to be used for things like interior lock-offs (separating two apartment units etc). A thief that is willing to break glass, is going to get into your home regardless of the lock.
Because of the safety liabilities associated with double sided locks, I double you are going to find a lot of companies jumping on that one as a high priority.
I’ve been thinking about the safety issue as well. This is to the back door, which empties onto raised deck. In addition to the glass in the door there is a window directly next to the door, so the thief could easily just break through that window and enter anyway. From a previous life the phrase “locks keep the honest people out” should have come to my mind before asking this.
