Adding an X10 Device

Hello,
Vera newbie here with what I hope is a simple answer.

I just purchased a Vera 2 which upgraded to the latest firmware when I first plugged it in. I have been successful with getting a Schlage Link lock to work properly, but can’t seem to figure out how to add a simple X10 device (lamp module). I installed the 2412 device and enabled insteon successfully.

Can someone please tell me what to type into the 2 boxes before clicking the “go” button? The first box says to enter the house code. I’ve tried a simple “A”, as well as a house and device code “A14”, and also with a space “A 14”. In the second box, it says to identify the type…have no idea what they expect in this box…tried the same codes as well as typing “lamp”. When I do click the go button, I get the “command sent” message…no new devices ever show up in the devices list.

The documentation for X10 on the mios docs page is completely blank…thanks Micasaverde.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

I totally second this request. Have been stumped and stymied the several times I’ve tried setting up X10 with Vera - which was arguably my #1 or #2 reason for getting Vera in the first place. Here I am a specialty USB-to-serial cable, a 2412U module and 5 months later still hoping the process can be streamlined and clarified.

There needs to be a complete “How To” for doing X10 with Vera, with very clear, simple steps.

Although I am not sure, you may need this interface.

librasun- you using a vera1?

can you get the insteon installed? if so and you are on UI2- then under devices pick instean and x10. at the top it says “add an x10” (pick item from drop down) “with house code” (enter the code here) in (pick room from drop down) and hit go.

for house code- enter a letter and a number like F1.

in .994 that will enable you to send on and off commands but vera will note display what the status of a device is (even if you just send an on or off command). If wont allow you to use x10 devices to trigger scnese. And there is no ability to receive an x10 command from another device. But if all you want is on and off you are golden.

2412s will work with a usb → serial adapter as long as the adapter works with the drivers vera comes with. the wiki page here lists adapters that people know do or dont work.

Oops, I should clarify that I own a 2412s (serial) connected via the Future Technologies USB-to-serial cable. Please forgive my earlier typo.

Now, as to your reply, MichaelK (thank you!):

  1. I began by connecting the FT cable to my 2412s, plugged the 2412s PLM into a wall socket, and then the USB end of the FT cable into Vera’s available USB port.
  2. I did indeed begin with the same “Enable” steps you outlined.
  3. I’m using 1.0.979 on a Vera1, and her first words about Insteon/X10 were:
“INSTEON and X10 interface not found, do you want to enable it?”
  4. Upon enabling, I added a device (my only one, for testing purposes), a “Dimmable Light” using ID code M13 (no spaces).
  5. Both the dimmable lamp (X10) module and the lamp+bulb are known-good.
  6. When I tried clicking OFF (or ON), Vera responded: “Command Failed: undefined”

And that pretty much sums up my unfortunate experience(s) - I’ve tried this about 20-30 times since late last year - with X10 under Vera.

Any further upgrades, mods or suggestions I should try? I’ve been woefully behind reading the Forum (“Hi, guys!”), so may have missed this as a “Known Bug” or something.

THANKS!!

Another follow-up:

Several hours later, I noticed Vera’s warning error had changed to:

“Command failed: Insteon not ready”

Curious.

i get errors intermittantly when i run commands but in general whenever i take it out to test it works fine.

But I have only tested with an appliance module. Didn’t bother to try a lamp module or do anything else because of the other limitations.

the one thing i find weirdest is I am using a 4port serial adapter- and i never selected “device used by” to be insteon for any of them. I guess i plugged it into whatever port it happens to think it’s in.

Hello,
I am using the 2412u, and have gotten past the question about enabling insteon. Looks like it enabled successfully. I still can’t seem to find the right combination of what to enter into the 2 boxes under “add x10”. I get a “command sent” message, but no devices show up in the device list.

Vera 2 with latest firmware here…Thanks for any suggestions!!!

PS561 and CM15a or CM11a = X-10

Vera = Z-wave

I thought this was the whole idea behind Vera and the main
reason for choosing Vera in the first place.

Why go back to 30 year old technology? ::slight_smile:

just my $.02

Probably for the same reason I still occasionally listen to AM radio, even though my car is only a year old. ;D

What’s more, a bunch of us are die-hard home automation enthusiasts who invested heavily in the original X10 technologies, and would like to parlay that investment with Vera. After all, that’s one of Vera’s selling points!

for me, there are devices that exist for x-10 that don’t yet have z-wave equivalents.

Z-wave rocks but it’s still “young”. While there are tons of neat things that I dont know exist in X-10. There are x-10 things that exist where there is no z-wave.

Specifically for me there is no IR receiver that can output z-wave. It doesn’t exist. But you can get an IR receiver that spits out x-10. I happen to have one. And for such a use to raise or lower the lights in the family room when the tv is on I dont know that it matters that x-10 might fail every now and again.

beyond that, X-10 allows one to EASILY create ‘virtual devices’ that you can use as flags to effect scenes.

Unfortunately vera supports neither use. :frowning:

But I have a drawer full of x-10 gadgets to play with so I dont see any reason to throw them away at the moment.

And for less important things it’s a lot cheaper. For example Is it critical that christmass lights go on right at the pefect time, or can we just send the on command 5 times in a row a minute apart to make sure the lights actually go on? Or would I rather pay 4-5 times as much for a module and get z-wave to be sure they go on the fist time?

I dont think MCZ should stop everything to add x-10. And clearly x-wave should be the main focus. But if it’s no big deal to toss some fun to the x-10 folks everyone now and again than why not?

Stoney,
My intent with this topic was not to debate the use of x10 vs zwave… Just trying to get Vera to do something that MiCasaVerde advertises that Vera can do…which it doesn’t appear to do…this is false advertisement to me…

Not asking for something complicated…just would like to know how to add a simple X10 light module to Vera2…
