A very simple usb to irda transmitter, will it work?

Hi,

I have VeraLite and was wondering if a simple usb to irda device which can be bought for 5$ will work to send just one on/off command to one of my A/V boxes (the last which is using IrDa, rest is using eth).

I can set up the linux env to get all the codes and then put it to the XML file as described on one of those forums, but just wondering if Vera will recognize one of those IrDa devices and will send one signal to power on/off a single device, or do I need to go via much more expensive route of getting usb-irda, irtrans or other transmitters?

This is a great question - I’m exactly in the same boat with an A/V Receiver that has a serial interface which you can switch off, but not on! My concern would be that you might need some Linux device driver for Vera which may or may not exist. I doubt it’s just plug and play. It’s certainly worth expending a bit of effort to find out. I didn’t really want to splash out for an SQ Blaster Plus just to turn on the amp.

So I don’t know the answer, but I’ll add it to the list of things to investigate.
Perhaps someone else can help more.
