3-Way Switch Help

Hey Guys,

I’m in Ottawa, Canada and I’m trying to replace a 3-way-switch to a outlet – with one of GE/Jasco kits.

I have 2 switch boxes:

SW1: 14/3 drops in (red, black, white, with the black on the common)
SW2: 14/3 drops in , and 14/2 drops in
In this switch there is some funny things happening which I’m not to sure about…
Black from 14/3 → is twisted with White from 14/2
White from 14/3 - and Black/Red from 14/2 connect to the switch ( black on common )

Outlet: has a 14/2 – and some black wires twisted together in the back.

I’m not to sure what to make of this, and how this would translate into connecting with the GE kit.

you have to check if its a hotel switch. its most common practice to twist wires for this kinda usage.

Hope this link helps:

Useful information for GE 3-way connections.

Made this diagram a while back to help someone, perhaps it can be of some help to you as well…

@Anthony420 - Those are fantastic diagrams! However, they are for standard 3-way switches. While they may help him figure out what’s what with his original switches, that wiring diagram will not work with the GE/Jasco switches. The GE/Jasco Z-Wave 3-way wiring is different. It is one of several unique/proprietary wiring schemes used by the different Z-Wave switch manufacturers.

The GE/Jasco switches work the same way as any 3/4 way setup, BUT they need a control line and gnd, hence the reason for the extra wiring points. It sounds like the circuit may have undiscovered objects on the circuit to me…ie extra wall plugs unswitched or another switch location that has been removed, with the wires he is seeing coming from an unknown or hidden location. I advise caution…
